The body regulates the normal functioning of the prostate using male hormones – also called androgens – which travel around your body in the blood. The main hormone is one you may have heard of: testosterone.
Testosterone is mainly produced by the testicles, but also by the adrenal gland (found above the kidneys).
This is a cancer that occurs in the prostate gland. It mainly affects men aged over 50, and currently over 330,000 men in the UK are living with the disease.
Prostate cancer occurs when prostate cells begin to malfunction – they respond to normal levels of testosterone by growing faster and in an uncontrolled way. This can lead to a tumour.
